  • Fall Season Begins Monday, August 22!

Are you ready for a break from the Summer heat? Fall is around the corner and the cooler weather in store for us brings with it a host of fun opportunities for our adventure racing team.

Our target race this season is Texas Adventure Racing's Huntsville Hammer at Huntsville State Park on November 12, 2011. Huntsville is a great venue that offers hours of fun for racers of all levels. Accordingly, this season is a fantastic time to welcome in newcomers to our group. Anyone looking to learn more about adventure racing or our training programs is invited to attend one of our practices for free (limit of one session per season). Just be sure that they check in with an organizer or coach to sign waivers first. And if you refer a member, you get a $25 gift certificate to Bike Barn.

If you haven't yet signed up for the season, there's still plenty of time. New members will pay $135 and returning members pay $110. For those of you with a little more experience, don't forget that after completing six seasons you qualify for elite member status and membership drops to just $150 a year.

    Sign up online today!

Finally, don't forget about the generous discounts offered by our title sponsor, Bike Barn. Being a member of Houston Fit AR entitles you to 10% off at all retail locations.

Thanks to Bob & Joel for always catching the best photos out there while we race. Adventure racing is not always a spectator sport, sometimes being away from transition area for hours, so we appreciate you being out there in the action to capture those moments!

Don't forget that they are extending a 20% off discount to HFAR members on any photos in any of their galleries on orders of $10 or more.

To access the discount, simply use coupon code HFAR20Off upon check-out. Check out their latest photos from the Summer sprint series today!

    I will be an Ironman!

    Ironman Texas 2011
    By Helena Finley

Completing an Iron Man does not have to Entail Arduous Training and Spending a Fortune

...unless of course you want to go faster than 12h18 min.

I don't own a tri-bike, aquablade swim suit, disc wheels or an aerodynamic time trial helmet. I don't measure my heart rate, know how many calories I consume, or, what my cadence is. What I do have is a supportive husband, three enthusiastic children and a wonderful network of friends for support.

To complete an iron man you need not give up everything fun in life, Nor do you need to spend a fortune on gear. Notice I said complete. If you want to win your age group or qualify for Kona, go back to reading Lava, training every day and take out a loan for the required gear.

Spread Your Wings 2011 Race Report
    By Kevin Bowen

It was Memorial Day weekend and to a Texas adventure racer that meant Too Cool's Spread Your Wings, a very fun race located in the remote and scenic hill country that surrounds Camp Eagle in Rocksprings. On Friday afternoon I met up with my teammates Raymund and Melissa and we piled into the car to make the trip out there. That night at the camp we met up with our 4th teammate Helena. All three of my teammates had completed Ironman Texas only a week previous and I have to say that I was very impressed that they were up for doing this race so soon afterwards! We setup TA and then settled in for a good night's sleep before the race. In the morning we were set to go! At the prerace meeting they warned us of 100 degree heat index and gave us some SYW history that solved a mystery for me.

The map shows a very distinct Eagle Cliff 2km SES of TA. It appears to be a great place to put a checkpoint, but no race in the past 4 years has had a checkpoint placed there. This had been a mystery to me until this year's prerace meeting. Turns out that years ago they did place a point on the top of the cliff. Unfortunately one team plotted the point at the base of the cliff and when they found themselves cliffed out they decided to scale the cliff instead of taking the long way around. The landowner happened to be driving by at that time, saw them, and told race directors Art and Robyn that they would never again be allowed to set points on his land. The lesson here folks is to please exercise wise judgment and race safely. But new for this year Art and Robyn did get permission from the land owner to the East and were granted permission across the former land owner's property as long as the racers stuck to a set path. More on that later.

    SOLE Custom Footbeds
    By Raymund Codina

I'm a huge fan of Salomon trail running shoes and since I've started adventure racing, own 8 pairs with the 9th on order. I especially favor the stability it provides on trails and the ease of the speed lace. However, I have always complained about one flawed key component: the footbed. Salomon shoes come with a stock footbed that feels like it provides cushioning equivalent to 2 layers of tissues and a cotton ball. As we are all well aware, in conditions of trekking through chunks of granite and other hard surfaces, your dogs are barking in the 12+ hour and longer adventure races.

I have found my solution to happy feet... Sole Custom Footbeds - custom inserts that provide the additional stability and cushioning I need. They are customized by cutting them to size and heating in an oven to mold to your feet. They are a bit pricey at $45 a pair but worth their weight in gold. They rock.... literally.

But, here is the best part: Sole has agreed to extend a huge 40% discount to our membership through the end of the year on any business conducted through their athlete pro-deal online store
